Many individual elephants here are known by name, and multi-generational family groups demonstrate the complex social bonds that define elephant culture.

The name Amboseli comes from the Maasai word meaning salty dust, a reference to the dry lake bed that dominates the park's center. Underground water from Kilimanjaro's melting snows feeds permanent swamps that serve as oases in this semi-arid landscape, attracting wildlife and birdlife in abundance.
