Your Safari Itinerary

Welcome to Rwanda - the 'Land of a Thousand Hills'. Arrive at Kigali International Airport and meet your dedicated safari guide. Option to visit the profound Kigali Genocide Memorial, a moving tribute to the 1994 tragedy that provides essential context for understanding modern Rwanda's remarkable transformation. Drive north through Rwanda's stunning highland landscape - emerald hills terraced with crops, eucalyptus forests, and traditional homesteads. The 2.5-hour journey to Volcanoes National Park takes you to the base of the Virunga Volcanoes, five mighty peaks forming the border with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Arrive at your luxury lodge with dramatic volcano views. Evening gorilla trekking briefing and welcome dinner.

DinnerFive Volcanoes Boutique Hotel

The moment you've dreamed of! After an early breakfast, drive to park headquarters for registration with the Rwanda Development Board. You'll be assigned to one of Volcanoes' 12 habituated gorilla families based on fitness level - treks range from 1-6 hours. Enter the bamboo and hagenia forests on the slopes of the ancient volcanoes - this is Dian Fossey's legendary territory where she conducted groundbreaking gorilla research. The trails climb through multiple vegetation zones: cultivated foothills, bamboo forest, hagenia-hypericum woodland, and alpine meadows. When you locate your gorilla family, all effort dissolves into wonder. Spend one magical hour observing silverbacks, playful juveniles, nurturing mothers with infants - behaviors remarkably similar to our own. Return to your lodge on an emotional high. Afternoon at leisure to reflect or explore the lodge gardens.

BreakfastLunchDinnerFive Volcanoes Boutique Hotel

This morning offers enriching optional activities. Golden monkey trekking (additional permit) takes you back into the bamboo forest to find these beautiful, endangered primates endemic to the Virunga Volcanoes - their golden-orange patches contrast brilliantly against the green bamboo. Alternatively, hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb and the Karisoke Research Center site, a 6-hour trek through stunning montane forest where you'll pay respects to the legendary primatologist buried among the gorillas she loved. Both experiences deepen your understanding of Rwanda's conservation success story. After lunch, drive back to Kigali. Optional city tour exploring vibrant local markets, craft cooperatives, and Rwanda's emerging coffee culture before your departure flight.
